My mom raised me to be a bargain hunter. In our early years, we needed all the help we could get, but at some point, it was more of a challenge than a need. Sometimes my dad said, “if you want, it, get it“. He didn’t understand. I just hated paying more for something that I had to. It meant I didn’t have that other money to spend on something else!
So the first time I acknowledged that I qualified for a senior discount was when I turned 50. On my birthday I went to the bank and changed my checking account to a no-fee senior account. One of the girls I worked with, who was a couple years older, didn’t know she qualified until I mentioned it – she left work to go change hers, too.
I discovered more. Discounts at grocery stores, department stores, special rates at hotels ( yay- I love to travel), movies – they were everywhere! The qualifying ages are all different, which is baffling, so I had to wait a few years for some. But it didn’t take long for me to start looking, everywhere I went.
My mantra used to be “don’t pay retail“. Now it’s “I’m a Senior – don’t I get a discount?“.
I found this list of discounts for seniors at restaurants on my computer recently, from some article on the internet, I’m sure. I save things like that. It must be fairly old, because I think some of these places don’t exist any more – at least, not in my area. I go to a few of these all the time and didn’t know about the discounts. Hey – I’ve been overcharged!! I’m on a quest, now, to check them out.
Here’s the list. Keep it. Let’s face it - I’m not naming names, but some of you are ahead of me. The rest? You’ll get there, soon enough.
Do you know of any others?

The discount helps to pay the tax. When the discount is given without our asking, my husband, laughing, asks the clerk, “How did you know?:
I feel the same way. Popeye’s Chicken gives a discount, but you have to ask for it. Not sure how much, probably in line with the others.
