There they lay,
in the far corner of the bottom drawer –
someone’s cherished possessions, tucked safely away.
Whether forgotten, or abandoned, I treasured them as a gift.
Colored Paper Clips.
I displayed them in a jar on my desk,
cheerful as brightly colored jelly beans,
(until passers-by began to help themselves, mindless
of their value. Didn’t they know???).
Then, I, too tucked them away;
hid them from view, known only to me.
Sometime later a friend, knowing my fondness,
presented me with a beautiful tapestry box
containing colored rubber bands, sticky notes,
and Colored Paper Clips.
I joyfully added them to my collection.
Use them? Give them away?? NEVER!
The plain silver ones
are good enough for the outside world.
Once I thought I would organize and
put them to practical use -
Green for money, Pink for romance,
Red for anger, Blue for melancholy…
But I find there are more colors than I can use,
unless I subcategory my emotions.
So, like Silas Marner’s gold pieces,
they sit in jars on a shelf -
untarnished, unused, and therefore
unappreciated .
I should release them, one by one,
to new lives,
to be admired and passed on to others,
so that each may receive its due.
What other things should I be sharing?
